Premier Stelmach takes lead at historical event
The Honourable Ed Stelmach helped make history today by taking part in the official Sod Turning Ceremony for the first-ever Habitat for Humanity build in the city of Fort Saskatchewan.
The Premier was accompanied by Deputy Mayor Ed van Delden, Dow Chemical Canada Inc’s President Jeff Johnston and Habitat’s Chair Andy Banack. Together with the two Habitat partner families the group dug deep into the ground of the Premier’s constituency to officially launch Habitat coming to the community.
Dow Chemical Canada Inc. has taken the lead sponsorship role by gifting the charity $100,000 along with a variety of Dow Building Solutions products and over 50 volunteers to help construct the project. Many other sponsors have come on board both through financial and gift in kind material support.
This build will also be a Habitat first in that it will be the first-ever Blitz Build for the Edmonton affiliate of Habitat. In 14 days a duplex will be constructed from start to finish with the support of hundreds of volunteers.
The site will come alive on April 26th when over 100 volunteers will emerge at 97 Avenue and 101 Street in Fort Saskatchewan. On May 10th the homes will be presented to two families in an official Dedication Ceremony at 4:00 p.m.
The two families that have been selected by Habitat are Ines Graf and daughter Jasmine and Dawn Shiel and her two sons Brady and Connor.
